CUNY's Institute for Software Design and Development (CISDD) and DOITT sponsor the Citywide Information Technology Internship (CITY) program, which is designed to provide City agencies with high quality interns from the CUNY schools, and in turn provide the students with valuable work experience.

The program consists of partnerships with a variety of city agencies that allows CUNY students to receive practical hands-on training and experience while assisting NYC agencies in achieving their long-term technical objectives. Students work in a variety of locations, applying their technical and professional skills in the areas of consulting, network administration, programming and databases. This is considered an on-campus internship.

Student interns function as integral parts of project teams conducting work and developing skills in a variety of disciplines including:
  • Application Development- Programming and implementation; intranet, data model, documentation and electronic report development; client application development.
  • Business Analysis - Articulate business requirements for technological change and /or improvement.
  • Client Service- End-User training, technical consulting and hardware/software troubleshooting, helpdesk/desktop support.
  • Databases- Analyzing, coding, designing, integrating, testing and implementing.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - Environmental impact analysis, transportation planning, and health risk assessment.
  • Network Administration- Administration, configuration, troubleshooting, updates, and development of client/server applications.
  • Public Administration - Public management, policy analysis and evaluation, and health care policy
  • Systems Analysis and Design- Determining IT requirements and implementing appropriate system hardware/ architecture, hardware testing, PC surveys.
  • Urban Planning - Housing and real estate, economic development, land use and design, transportation and environment, and human services

Information for Current CITY Interns

Current CITY Interns should remember these important points about your employment with our program:
  • Your employer is the Research Foundation of CUNY, not the agency for which you work.
  • You may not work more than seven (7) hours in one workday.
  • Your maximum hours per week are determined by your work status, your school status (enrolled or graduated) and the agency budget for your position.
  • You may not work more than your total budgeted hours every two weeks. International Students may not work more than 19 hours per week during the school year.
  • During summer and winter breaks you will be allowed to work 34 hours per week, if budgeted by your agency.
  • You may also be eligible to work 34 hours a week for one year after graduation, if budgeted by your agency.
  • Any change in work hours (moving from 19 hours a week to 28 or 34 hours a week) must be approved by the CITY Program Project Director.
  • Students are responsible for submitting their e-timesheets by the established deadline - currently every other Monday at 10:00 AM. View the payroll calendar for this year's submission deadlines.
  • All interns must use all accrued annual leave prior to the end of the project year, which is 06/30/06. No annual leave will be carried over from one project year to the next (with some agency specific exceptions). Any annual leave not used by 6/30/06 will be lost.


FAQ
Who do I contact with questions about Time & Leave?
If you have any questions about Time & Leave you can contact the CITY Project Director for assistance.

How do I get permission to use annual leave?
You must give your supervisor a two-week notice if you want to take your annual leave. You must also submit a time & leave submission form (also available from the CITY Project Director ) with supervisor signature prior to the timesheet due date.

What about sick time?
If you are not able to go to work because of a sickness, you must call your agency supervisor. You may also use sick leave for doctor and dentist appointments with prior approval from your agency supervisor. There is no documentation to submit to the CITY Project Director.

How do I check my time and leave balance?
When you log into the e-timesheet system at RFCUNY website , you will see a drop-down menu, you can choose the option "View Schedule and Time & Leave". Once you click on the "Go" button and choose the right account, you will be able to see your Time & Leave Balances.

How do I fill out sick time and annual leave on my timesheet?
After you log into the e-time sheet system at RFCUNY website, you will see a drop-down menu, you can choose the option "Create/Edit/Submit Time Sheet". Once you click the "Go" button and choose the correct pay period, and account, you will be able to fill out the sick hours under the column "Sick" and annual leave hours under "Ann". Please note that you should never put in any hours under "Unsch" or "Other."
