IT Classes at the School of Professional Studies

For the Fall 2007 semester, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (SPS), in partnership with CISDD, will be offering the following IT courses:

§     Advanced MS SQL Server 2005 for Programmers

§     Programming with Visual Basic .NET

§     Advanced Enterprise Java

All classes are taught by industry professionals and designed to give students valuable hands-on experience.

ADVANCED MS SQL SERVER 2005 FOR PROGRAMMERS

Tuesdays, 6:30pm-9:15pm, starting September 11, 2007

 

This course provides students with the technical skills required to manage a database using Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It combines both lectures and labs to provide students with hands-on  Microsoft SQL Server experience. Students will design, develop, and implement a database project, working as database developers on a project team. This course would help prepare the student for a number of IT positions, including database developer, database administrator, IT consultant, and IT manager.

 

This course can be taken for 3 undergraduate credits for $510 tuition or on a non-credit basis for $400 plus $25 registration fee.

Pre-requisites:

1)    Experience using a Microsoft Windows® operating system

2)    Understanding of basic relational database concepts

3)    Knowledge of basic Transact-SQL syntax (SELECT, UPDATE, and INSERT statements)

4)    Familiarity with the role of the database administrator

5)    Understanding of basic programming languages

6)    Understanding of XML

PROGRAMMING WITH VISUAL BASIC .NET

Wednesdays, 6:30pm-9:15pm, starting September 5, 2007

 

This course provides students with the skills required to build WinForm applications and ASP.NET web applications. The course will cover the major topics in VB.NET, including: WinForms, GDI+, simple data access, interoperating with unmanaged code, threading and asynchronous programming issues, simple remoting, Web access, debugging, security and deployment issues for desktop applications, ADO.NET, ASP.NET and XML Web services.

 

The course combines lectures and labs to provide students with hands-on experience at building an end-to-end distributed enterprise application. Students will learn about core enterprise .NET technologies in a real IT environment. Students will also learn the latest .NET development tools and application server products, like Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, SQL Server and Internet Information Server.

 

This course can be taken for 3 undergraduate credits for $510 tuition or on a non-credit basis for $400 plus $25 registration fee.

2)    Understanding of Web technologies; able to write a web page using HTML

3)    Familiarity with relational database theory and the basics of structured query language

4)    Familiarity with component technology

5)    Understanding of distributed programming (multi-tier architecture)

6)    Familiarity with .NET development tools, like Visual Studio

7)    Understanding of XML

ADVANCED ENTERPRISE JAVA

Thursdays, 6:30pm-9:15pm, starting September 6, 2007

 

This course provides students with the knowledge necessary to design, implement, deploy, and maintain robust enterprise applications and web services using Java technology and the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform standards. The components presented in this course include Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) technology, servlets, and Java Server Pages (JSP) technology, Web Services and the Java technology clients that use them.

 

The course will introduce students to the most popular J2EE development environment and application server in the industry, and combines both lectures and labs to provide students with hands-on experience in building an end-to-end, distributed enterprise application. Students will learn about core enterprise Java technologies in a real IT environment, as well as the latest Java development tools and Java Application server products, such as Eclipse, IBM WebSphere Development Studio and IBM WebSphere Application Server.

 

This course can be taken for 3 undergraduate credits for $510 tuition or on a non-credit basis for $400 plus $25 registration fee.
